. United Nations: Prisoners Tortured in Afghan Prisons
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Afghanistan (UNAMA) says that according to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva, there are numerous allegations that prisoners are being tortured in Afghan detention centers and that their basic rights are being largely ignored.
The report states that torture and ill-treatment are prohibited under Afghan law and international law. According to the agency, although the rate of torture in the country has decreased by three percent compared to last year, it still continues.
“Torture is never justified,” said Debra Lines, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan. “This has long-term consequences for victims, families and the community.”
Ms Lions said efforts should be made to end the torture and help the rule of law and peace be brought to justice by dealing with the perpetrators.
