The Afghan embassy in Japan, which is still operating under the management of diplomats from the previous government, has announced that it will officially cease its work in the country’s capital at the end of January 2026.
According to a statement issued by the embassy on Friday, the decision to suspend activities was made after discussions with the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in close coordination with the country’s authorities. The statement said that this measure was taken in accordance with the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations adopted in 1961.
The Afghan embassy in Tokyo said that from January 31, 2026 onwards, all political, economic, cultural and consular activities of this diplomatic mission will be suspended until further notice. At the same time, no further details were provided about the future of consular services or the status of Afghan citizens living in Japan.
The mission emphasized that the decision was made within the framework of legal and diplomatic considerations and aims to observe the accepted principles of relations between countries.
After the political upheavals of recent years in Afghanistan, a number of the country’s embassies and diplomatic missions abroad are still run by diplomats from the previous government. Currently, Shaida Abdali is serving as Afghanistan’s ambassador to Japan.
